Struggle with dry lips? You aren’t the only one. While my homemade lip balms very much help keep my lips hydrated and the worse of the dryness away, sometimes my lips are still uneven and I need a bit of extra help.
This is why I learned how to make homemade lip scrub.
A lip scrub exfoliates my lips and within minutes, they are smooth and lush. But, it gets even better!
This must be one of my easiest DIY skincare recipes because it doesn’t just take only minutes to make, but you may already have the ingredients in your pantry. And if you don’t, they are easy to pick up at the supermarket.
Below, I describe exactly what a lip scrub is, why I recommend you make your own homemade lip scrub and what ingredients they contain and why.
I then walk you through exactly how to make DIY lip scrub and then how to use it.
I include two different lip scrub recipes – a simple and easy one with ingredients you’ll probably already have and one that’s a bit more fun and different and especially for people who like lavender.

What Is Lip Scrub?
A lip scrub is a substance you can rub on your lips.
What does lip scrub do? You rub it on your lips to exfoliate them – so to remove dead and rough skin. This leaves you with healthier looking, smooth lips. A lip scrub is basically a lip exfoliator DIY.
It’s similar to body scrubs except it’s specifically designed for the sensitive skin of the lips.
You can think of it as a sugar scrub lip balm – except you don’t leave it on your lips and it gets rid of dead skin rather than moisturising.
Exfoliating your lips also helps your lips absorb things like lip balm better meaning it will be more effective in moisturising your lips.
Why Make Homemade Lip Scrub?
There are many reasons why you might want to make a DIY exfoliating lip scrub. Here are some of mine.
A Natural Lip Scrub Recipe Is So Effective At Giving Me Amazing Lips
The primary reason I recommend making a simple DIY lip scrub is because they are so effective. There is simply no reason to buy one when you already have the ingredients in your home and it takes only a couple of minutes can make something so effective.
The first time I used one, I was so suprised by the big difference it made on my lips. Super smooth!
It’s Cheap, Easy And Fun To Make The Best Lip Scrub
It really takes only moments to make a recipe for lip scrub. It must be the easiest DIY skincare recipe I have come across especially as it uses ingredients you may already have in the home.
It’s simply mixing a few ingredients together. Quick and fun!
You also don’t need much of any ingredient so it’s very cheap to make enough lip scrub to last awhile.
It’s also great to make with kids as they can easily do it themselves and there is no heat involved.
The Ingredients Are At The Supermarket (And Probably Already In Your Pantry)
As I stated above, the ingredients are easy. For my brown sugar honey lip scrub recipe below, you simply just need the honey, brown sugar and coconut oil.
If you don’t have any of those ingredients already, you can buy them at the supermarket very easily or order coconut oil here.
It’s All Natural
If you make your own lip scrub, you know exactly what is in it so you can be sure there’s no chemicals. Lips are ultra sensitive and you can easily accidentally consume what is on your lips. This makes it extra important to only use lip scrubs with natural ingredients.
The recipes below are all natural.
A Homemade Sugar Lip Scrub Makes A Great Present
Love making thoughtful gifts for your friends and family? Why not make them a lip scrub?
Quick, easy, look cool, useful and super thoughtful – all great qualities in a present.
Ingredients For Sugar Lip Scrub
Here, I walk you through the ingredients for lip scrub you need to make the best homemade lip scrub and why they are useful.
Not all ingredients are essential in every dry lip scrub and I do suggest an alternative to coconut oil below if you are looking for a homemade lip scrub without coconut oil.
Sugar is the key ingredient in this home lip scrub. The sugar granules are what exfoliate your lips as you rub it on.
Sugar also has some essential nutrients and works on all skin types.
The type of sugar to use is up to you. However, since lips are extra sensitive, I recommend brown sugar as this is softer and still is great at getting the work done.
You can also use regular white sugar, but it is a little coarser which may be too much for some skin.
I tend to use brown sugar most of the time although I like using white sugar in the lavender recipe below simply because it looks good 🙂
It’s also possible to use raw sugar but this is extra coarse and I don’t recommend using it on lips.
Coconut oil is great for skin including your lips. It cleanses, moisturises and softens skins.
In these coconut lip scrub recipes, it’ll work to moisturise your skin as the sugar exfoliates. Sounds like a win, hey!
Coconut oil also has antibacterial properties.
It’s not essential to use coconut oil though. If you aren’t a fan or you don’t have it, you could switch to olive oil, sunflower oil or almond oil.
Raw honey has many properties that make it great for your skin.
For a start, it helps balance bacteria on your skin. It actually works great on acne. Honey also helps heal skin cells, so if you have any damaged skin on your lips, honey will extra help by speeding up healing and reducing inflammation.
Raw honey is also an exfoliator so it assists the sugar in removing the dead skin on your lips.
Add in the fact that it leaves a nice taste on your lips and making a DIY honey lip scrub is a big win.
However, if you do want to make a homemade lip scrub without honey then follow the lavender lip scrub recipe below.
While dried lavender will add to the exfoliating properties of your DIY lip exfoliator scrub, I admit that I mostly add dried lavender because it looks good and adds a nice scent.
My lip scrub always feel more luxurious to me with this extra ingredient and I feel more special when putting it on which can only be a good thing!
How To Make Lip Scrub
Once you have your ingredients, learning how to make lip exfoliator is very easy!
You simply use a teaspoon to measure out your ingredients, mix and you are done.
You can switch the type of sugar for whatever suits you after reading the sugar section above.
Once it is made, store it in an airtight container.
Note that if you store it in the fridge, the coconut oil will solidify and you’ll need to sit it out for a little while before use.
How To Use Lip Scrub DIY
